The Legacy of Battling Thieves

Once upon a time when I reported for Stabroek News, I took naturally to crime. If at all I had a title it would have been Crime Reporter. It’s one of the greater ironies of my life.

As I listen to the steady kweeks of the crickets here in Craig, Guyana, I can’t help but think that maybe I took naturally to reporting crime because I, directly and indirectly, have been a steady victim.

If I really put my mind to it I can map my life from child to woman by recounting the attacks my family has suffered.

In the early 2000s gunmen barged into our shop. During the attack they shot at my uncles. A bullet grazed my older uncle and tore through the clothing of another. My grandfather was beaten to the head.

Now more than a decade later, my grandpa is dead, my uncles are almost old and my brother has inherited this legacy of battling thieves.

And me, what do I do? Not a damn thing it seems.

Sharing a quick moment with you while I’m on the go.
Sara.
